ok all my parents say no im 14 almost 15 in the end of june my parents say wait till im 18 but im confused some people say its bad and some say you can die and some say infections (like all piercings though) but i dont know i need proof of good and bad i guess...what ever you guys can give me....
Thanks ...Help need advice...should i get my tongue pierced?
i used to have my tongue pierced. I had to take it out because I made a bad choice in jewelry. It looked cute but I didn't factor in how much of a weight difference there was in the top and bottom balls (the top was a heavy steel star) and it stretched out the top of my hole. Had it for about three years and have had it out for the same amount of time.
There are a lot of risks for infection if you don't take care of it after you've gotten it done. You also won't be able to talk normal for at least a week and some people develop a permanent lisp. As for the risk of death...yeah...I suppose that could happen if you go to a bad piercer and they pierce it in the wrong spot, you've got higher risks of paralysis in at the very least your tongue and at the worst your entire lower jaw because of the nerves that are in your tongue. I've also known people who have had to get lots of dental work done because they played with it against their teeth too much or accidentally bit down on the piercing and it broke their teeth.
I do agree with your parents on waiting until you're 18. IF they don't think you should get it, and you still want it when you're 18 they can't stop you. The last thing you want to do is go behind their back and get it done.Help need advice...should i get my tongue pierced?
yes i think you should get your tongue pierced just b/c your 14 are 15 doesnt meant that yu should just go behind your parents back and do it ok trust me gurl you will look nice with it ok hollaback
you should do what you want to do!
when you're 18 you can think for yourself.
i have never heard of people dying from it, and it is a very common piercing! just go to a legit place that is clean and you feel comfortable in! yes infections can happen, but thats only if you don't take care of it properly. so if you get it done, take care of it an enjoy :)
as far as being skanky goes, its only skanky if the person is skanky, so that was a very rude statement to make :)
Do what you want to do. Don't listen to us, But listen to your parents.:)
Here are some of the risks involved:
There is a minor risk of heavy bleeding if a vein is hit; however, a qualified piercer should have no problem avoiding blood vessels. Some bleeding is normal, but a medical professional should be contacted if it cannot be controlled.
Tooth damage as a result of the wearer ';playing'; with the barbell by rubbing it along his/her teeth
Tooth damage as a result of the wearer ';playing'; with the barbell by rubbing it along his/her teeth
The piercing has a tendency to heal a bit crooked as a result of the frenulum's placement in the exact center of the tongue. This is usually undetectable by anyone except the piercing's owner, but in some cases it can be quite pronounced.
Tooth and gum damage are risks, but they can be minimized by proper placement, the use of properly-sized jewelry, and avoiding playing with the piercing. A bar that is very large-gauge or too long can greatly increase the risk of chipped teeth or gum erosion, and excessive impacts of the metal against the teeth can cause micro-fractures in the tooth enamel.
A common misconception is that since the mouth is dirty (see staphylococcus and streptococcus), tongue and oral piercings are more prone to infection and will take longer than other piercings to heal. While it is true that the human mouth, and foods can contain numerous bacteria, saliva is highly effective at both protecting from infection and promoting healing.
For this reason, oral piercings tend to actually heal faster (4-6 weeks) than many other piercings, which can take many months depending on location, as long as appropriate care to prevent infection is taken. Mouthwash is frequently used to diminish chances of infection.
12 Health Risks reported by the ADA
1. Severe bleeding or nerve damage: if the needle punctures a blood vessel during the piercing, severe and difficult-to-control bleeding could occur.
2. Infection: the mouth contains millions of bacteria, and bacterial infection is a common complication from tongue piercing.
3. Pain: healing time prolonged.
4. Swelling: the tongue could swell large enough to close off the airway.
5. Disease transmission: The National Institutes of Health (www.nih.gov) has identified piercing in general as a possible vector for blood borne hepatitis (hepatitis B, C, D and G) transmission. In addition, there is risk of other disease transmission such as HIV.
6. Choking hazard: tongue jewelry could come loose in the mouth creating a choking hazard.
7. Chipped or cracked teeth: tongue jewelry can chip or crack the teeth.
8. Enamel loss: tongue jewelry can increase the risk of damage to teeth enamel.
9. Recessed gums: The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) has reported that tongue piercing increases the risk for recessed gums.
10. Tooth loss: The JADA has reported that tongue piercing increases the risk for loose teeth and tooth loss.
11. Scar tissue formation: thick scarring could form at the piercing site.
12. Speech Interference: tongue jewelry can interfere with speech.
If I was you I would say no. I think its nasty. But it is your choice.
ha! sounds like your getting one sided answers..
i've had my tongue pierced for years... and i havent had any problems that i was warned about
no chipped teeth[because it was peirced far enough back to not touch my teeth/i dont play with it constantly], no cavities, no infections [cause i keep it clean!], i have never lost a bead down my throat!, and all that other stuff..
my cousin has had hers for almost 17years. and she hasnt either.
if you do end up getting one, then here's some tips:
go to a liscensed professional and be sure they use all sterile equipment, once it is peirced: CLEAN IT RELIGIOUSLY!, you have to baby piercings until they're healed or else yes, you will get a horrible infection.
this definitly isn't a peircing to get behind your parents back, cause you clearly have a speach impediment for a few days, and the barbell is visible while you talk. and whatever you do: DO NOT go to an illegal peircer who does underage peircings out of their garage or whatever.thats the WORST thing you can do. been there done that, believe me, i was addicted before i was 15.
so there's some tips if your parents agree, if not, wait til you can legally get done safely.
16 is a good age other wise its looks stupid
They're totally hot, and I want one; but the tongue is a muscle and it never really heals. Because it never heals, bacteria can easily get into your blood stream and there have been some reports of heart attacks. It isn't terribly common, but I'm not willing to risk it.
Go ask your doctor if you want proof
my tounge was pierced. it only took a few months for it to get infected. it hurt so bad. of course there is a rish with allpiercings but tounge is the worst. i couldn't eat or drink without being in pain. Coughing was the worst. it hurt me so bad and when you cough, you move it out of place and it starts to bleed. my advice is not to do it. i was 14 when i got it done. one of the worst mistakes i've made.
I think they are kinda skanky personally. Also the infections I hear can be awful - worse than any other piercing.
Look at these pictures and decide if you want to take that risk... http://www.drhendry.ca/InfoAndLinks/Tong鈥?/a>
Your tongue piercing is the least likely place to get infected! The saliva is constantly cleaning it. I have mine pierced twice and have had no problems I just got my second one recently and just used mouth wash twice a day (which I always do) and it's fine.
I have heard that someone died from getting the wrong vein hit or something I don't know if this is true.....
I've seen photos of nasty infections but I know a lot of people with their tongues pierced who haven't had infections... The people who got them must of just not looked after it at all I'm guessing.
It's a simple easy to care for piercing just go to a professional piercer who knows what they're doing and look after it then everything should be fine.
You won't get chipped teeth if you don't mess about with it in your mouth and if you wear plastic bars you're less likely too.
Basically I'm saying from what I've seen (quite a lot and I have it twice) a tongue piercing is safe! And they're fun!
';all my parents say no.';
How many parents do you have, exactly?
Tongue piercings are ugly, pointless, and skanky.
But hey, if that's what you're going for, then all the power to you.
I don't see why you're even asking this.
Your parents said no.
It's not like it's a piercing you can hide from them.
Well, You probably should wait till you are 18 i had to wait until i was and then i got my tongue pierced. They can be bad but really you can avoid the bad. You just need to find a good place that can do a good piercing and are clean and safe. That way it will be done correctly and you do not have to worry about so much of the piercing the wrong area. Also, yes it can be bad on your teeth but you should know not to play with it as in biting the bar plus they have other materials that are made to be better for your teeth. I like the plastic ones and i use a short bar that way it is not knocking on my teeth. As far as infections..They are possibly but not if you eat and clean and do as the piercer says to do. Just keep it clean and washed out after you smoke or drink or eat....this is good...dont play with it and dont kiss other people or anything until told when it is okay...You just have to let it heal..Its not that bad....But good luck...
