Any advice on getting my husband to let me get a cat?

Well not just any cat. I kind of almost got him talked into letting me get a cat but i want a hairless cat i had one growing up and well he thinks they are gross..He's never seen or even peted one. He's a dog person. And i'm a cat person. Out of all the cats i've had i think that he would like the hairless cat's personality. Sphynx is the breed...I've thought about taking him to a faimly breeder which is only 30 miles away they breed them as faimly pets only have a litter once a year and adopt others that can't handle the cats....Anyways his main point was that he hates cat cuz they shed well they don't shed if they are hairless...any advice on getting him to let me get a cat...mostly a hairless oneAny advice on getting my husband to let me get a cat?
Hi Buggzzy!

That is a tough question! First you don't want your husband to resent the kitty, and that when he gives the ok, he is not just doing it to please you. Make sure that he really does want the kitty and will be open to a relationship with him. Cats are very sensitive to human emotions and it would not be fair for the kitty to begin a new life with someone who really is not ';into'; having him/her around.

I would not recommend a Sphynx as a first kitty, however, While they are super affectionate, and have extraordinary purrsonalities, they require a lot of special care. They need bathing at least every two weeks, as their skin exudes a oily substance which on a ';haired'; cat is absorbed by their coat.

You can read all about the breed at:

And while they don't shed, which is one of his requirements, he may not appreciate the extra work, until he falls in love with a kitty. I have found that often the bigger the cat hater, the faster they fall for them when the ';bug'; hits them. And to be honest, I don't see how anyone can't fall in love with a kitty.

Suggest a rex as an alternate. They don't shed much but do have a coat, and are somewhat lower maintenance cats, (if there is any such thing).

You might explore adopting from a rex purebred rescue. Here is a link to their site, with an email address to contact their coordinator.

Good luck with your search and your husband. Mine now is totally smitten, and they love him back!

I agree with the other responders. I would say that you can't educate the unwilling or at least it's difficult. It wouldn't hurt to find a breeder or rescue group for the sphinx. If none are in the area then maybe take him to a shelter. He might fall in love with cats if he finds one with a pleasing personality.
take him to see the sphynx cats and let him see for himself how they don't shed. I have a friend who has one and they make great pets. Show him how they are less costly to feed than a dog and you don't have to walk them all the time and can leave then for a day or two. Good luck.
Take him to see one. If you get one and don't tell him he'll be mad. My sister in law wanted a pug/cocker spaniel (pucker) and my brother said he didn't like them they were ugly. But he totally loves him now.
no sex until you get a cat.

let him get a dog, show him how much the dog sheds.
bring him to show the cat. Show him how much you want one and your life will be complete because you have him and a cat!

good luck!
';Letting you'; get a cat? I think you have other issues in your marriage if your husband is the one making all the decisions.
No more sex til then.
show him how much cheaper it would be than raising a child
Well it would be in your best intrest to borrow a cat from the breeder (ask for one who's well behaved) and bring it home for a few days. give your husband a chance to see feel and know a cat, if he still isn't into it, well, that's kinda life, because you have to understand, you're not the only one getting a cat. not only will he have to deal with the cats presence in the house, your household will incur the cost of buying the cat, any cat vet bills, cat food bills, litter bills etc. don't force a pet on your husband. You wouldn't want him to invite your mother in law to live without your concent, dont invite a cat without his.
Here's the thing. If your husband hates cats, you are going to have hard time convincing him. If you go ahead and get the cat and he isn't happy about it, the first time trouble arises (an accident in the house, clawed furniture whatever) he is going to be pissed about ';your cat,'; leading to call kinds of tension.

Getting a pet has to be a mutually agreed upon experience. If you don't agree, there will be problems. Most breeders want all family members on board for that reason. It prevents their animals from ending up being rehomed or in shelters.
Don't go to a family breeder, go to a animal center. Write down the possitive side of having a cat and the downside's of having a cat/kitten. I like both cats and dogs, there both great entertainers. So why not get your husband involved and get him to do the possitve side of having a dog and the downside of having one too. Give it a week both do your homework on it and then come together on a day and then say ''Okay, this is the possitve side of a cat/dog...But on the other hand if we get a cat/dog we'd have to put up with this.''

If neither of you are happy, don't get a cat or a dog.
Good luck on this!!! Begging works, I promise you. Point out the facts to your husband. Fact #1- Cats are actually cheaper to care for then dogs. I have 4 cats and 1 dog. My dogs food alone cost more than my cats litter and food put together.

Fact #2- Some dogs shed more than any cat that you could possibly get. Seriously, my ONE dog (Chow/ Golden Retriever Mix)sheds more then all FOUR of my cats put together and one of my cats is a long hair!

Fact #3- Cats are easier to care for then dogs. All you have to do is feed, water, brush them, clean their litter box, love them and occasionally take them to the vet.

Maybe he would be more willing to consider letting you have a cat if he got a say in which breed and which kitten. I love cats and even I find the hairless ones creepy. Since he is a dog lover, what about a breed that have some of the personality traits of a dog? Turkish Angora's are beautiful cats and their personalities are kind of like dogs. Even though they have a medium or long haired coat, they actually require little grooming. Twice a week. What I would do if I were you is I would go to the book store and buy a book on the different breeds of cats and have him look over it with you. If he still refuses, ask him why is it that he can have 3 dogs but you can't have one cat and point out how unfair that is.
He has 3 dogs and you're worried about getting a hairless cat?!?

Get a friend or family to buy one for you for your birthday or something. Then he'll just learn to deal with it.

Or just keep bugging him and taking trips to see cats until he gives in and gives a reluctant thumbs-up. I mean, come on, cats are less work than dogs, and if it doesn't shed what can he really complain about? I honestly think that you have every right to get one if you want one, but it is probably wisest for the relationship if you wait until he gives an OK.

Good luck!
Hi there. I think if you are serious about getting a Sphynx then you need to make sure you have really looked into the care that is required for this breed first. It requires alot of care such as:

It is a common belief that because the Sphynx is a hairless breed, that they are low-maintenance. This is not true!

Bodies

Because a Sphynx's skin gets oily and dirty, they need to be bathed more often than other cats. Some Sphynx owners use Dove Extra Moisturizing Shampoo, or Johnson's Baby Shampoo to bathe their kitties. Some kitties will enjoy baths, while others do not. If your cat does not enjoy baths, you may use baby wipes.

Ears

Sphynx do not have hair in their ears which helps trap dirt and other particles in the ears. As a result, Sphynx's ears need to be cleaned at least once a week. You can obtain an ear cleansing solution from your vet. Sphynx have dark-colored earwax, so make sure that your vet is familiar with the breed, as some vets will think that the dark-colored earwax is a result of ear mites. You can clean the ears with solution and Q Tips.

Nose and Eyes

The Sphynx do not have hairs around their noses and eyes which prevent particles from being trapped in the eyes and nose. You may want to just simply wipe the corners of their eyes and check for small mucus buildup in and around the nose weekly.

Feet

Again, because Sphynx do not have hair, dirt gets trapped in and around paws and claws. You can use baby wipes with lanolin, as they help remove the dirt and buildup. Do this once a week, also.

That being said, if you are already aware of the care this type of breed requires then I would suggest visiting some breeders and going to some cat shows in your area to see the breed up close and talk to the breeders about this type of cat's personality and the care that is required.

Because this cat doesn't have any hair it can also get sunburned easily so it needs to be kept indoors at all times.

I would make sure that your husband is agreeable to you getting a cat before you get one. Get him involved by showing him some websites on the cats you like and by expressing to him how much it would mean to you and make you happy to have one.

Good luck with your cat adventure.
